Whatsapp is already popular with India having over 200 million active users. It is one of India’s favorite messaging app giving conveniences of free texting and fastest means of communication. Whatsapp is under plans to soon roll out its business-messaging model where brands will be directly able to interact with the consumers. It leaves behind traditional text messages that brands sent to its consumers. Last year, Facebook announced its plan to find ways to work with businesses for messaging in coming months. Consumers today are more inclined towards technology and hence, there is no better way to stay up with them and send messages and interact with them where they are located. Indian telecom operators do not reveal the total number of text messages used by its customers but Whatsapp data revealed that consumers sent 1.4 billion whatsapp messages last year. Overall the use of SMS exchange messages is dropping as revealed by TRAI. But that doesn’t mean, the use of text messaging is soon going to die down or rather it should not be since we almost get all our booking confirmations on SMS. These business messages may soon move to Whatsapp, this is a very early stage to reinstate whether organizations shall completely stop sending text messages.
Whatsapp has been providing free services for its subscribers, giving an ad free environment and quick messaging services. Hence, charging business customers for using its services opens up new avenue for Whatsapp that they really can’t take down. Especially when there are competitors who are waiting to take its position.
Paytm, India’s largest mobile wallet had announced similar plans for introducing messaging feature for businesses later this year. With the latest announcements, it seems like these features are not too far when the businesses may want to start using whatsapp but SMS are here to exist, simply because they are the fastest means to send urgent text messages when Internet is not available.
